Samsung has had a busy week. Not only did the company unveil its first smart speaker, the Galaxy Home, it unveiled a new partnership with Sweden-based streaming music service Spotify.
Under the agreement, Spotify will become the "go-to music provider" on all Samsung devices, including the Galaxy Home smart speaker, and will be fully integrated with Samsung's voice assistant, Bixby. In practice, that means Spotify will be part of the initial setup process on any Samsung device, and Bixby will play songs from Spotify when a user asks for music.
According to eMarketer's first-ever forecast, 20.8% of US internet users, or 58.4 million people, will listen to Spotify at least once per month in 2018. That figure is expected to grow by double digits this year and next, before reaching 25.9% in 2022. eMarketer's figures include Spotify's paid and ad-based services.
Because Spotify and Samsung are direct competitors to Apple in their respective markets, the partnership makes sense, as it puts them in a better position to challenge the iOS maker.
Samsung is one of the leading hardware manufacturers in the world, meaning integration across its devices will likely improve Spotify's discoverability and further expand its user base.
