Active Speakers Vs. Passive Speakers

- Nov 06, 2018-

The Active Speaker is a built-in sounding and amplifying circuit for the speaker. It only needs to be connected to the power supply and input the music signal to make a sound. Many studio sounding speakers and professional speakers for engineering are active speakers.

Advantages 1: no need for rear drive, simple system

One of the biggest advantages of the active speaker is that you don't need to connect the rear drive. You can play the song by inputting the audio. It is most suitable for a friend who wants a simple audio system. Only the "player" and the "horn" can be completed system.

Advantage 2: save space

In addition, the active horn speaker does not need to be connected to the amplifier, so it can save a lot of space for the equipment, which is quite suitable for the CAS system or the desktop audio system which has been popular in recent years.

Advantages 3: complete package and sound quality are guaranteed

Since the speaker itself has a complete drive circuit and is equipped with decoding and sound separation, and input with a digital interface, the sound floor of the active speaker will be more stable, unlike passive speakers, which are more affected by wires and amplifiers.

Disadvantage 1: speaker needs to adjust the volume independently

The design of some active speaker speakers, the output of the left and right channel speakers need to be independently adjusted, so the volume adjustment will be a little troublesome, and the left and right speakers should be fine-tuned.

Disadvantage 2: need to connect the power cord and signal line

Although the active speaker is less than one Amp, in addition to the signal line, each speaker must be connected to one more power supply. If the speaker is far away, the cable will be more troublesome.

The two-channel speakers that are more common are "passive" speakers. Contrary to the "active" speakers, there is no built-in amplifier circuit, and the output of the rear stage or the combiner is required to drive the sound. Compared with traditional active speaker speakers, most of them are bookshelf design. Passive speakers are available in various styles, such as seats, bookshelves, satellites, etc.

Advantage 1: more flexibility of tuning

Due to the need to connect the amplifier drive, the sound floor of the passive horn speaker will be affected by the connected equipment and the wire. Sometimes the same set of horns will be heard. It will be completely different when heard and heard by others. . However, in disguise, there is more flexibility in tuning, and you can use the characteristics of the signal line and amplifier to complement or enhance the performance of the speaker.

Advantage 2: only need to connect the speaker cable

Although it is necessary to connect the amplifier, the passive speaker does not need to connect to the extra power cable. It only needs to connect to the amplifier with the signal cable, and the latter can directly drive the sound.

Advantage 3: Bi-Amp, Bi-Wire's diverse connection combination

Some passive horn speakers can support Bi-Amp and Bi-Wire connection methods, and enhance the performance of the horn through wire connection and additional rear stage.

Disadvantages: need Post-Amp to promote

Since the passive horn speakers are too diverse, the specifications, design and materials are different. If you want to talk about a common shortcoming, you need to connect the amp drive and need extra equipment and space.
