What Is Reverberation Time Ratio?

- Jun 22, 2018-

In the room reverberation time index, a reverberation time of 500Hz is used as the reference reverberation time, and the index of the ratio between the reverberation time of different frequencies and the reverberation time of 500Hz is examined. In general, the ratio of the bass reverberation time of the room to the 500Hz reverberation time should be greater than 1 and gradually increase as the frequency becomes lower; the ratio of the high tone reverberation time to the 500Hz reverberation time. It should be less than 1 and gradually become smaller as the frequency becomes higher. If this rule is not met, it indicates that the room has acoustic defects. This is because in the process of sound reflection and propagation, the sound absorbing material and the air absorb much of the high-frequency components in the sound and the low-frequency component absorbs less, resulting in a long bass reverberation time and a short treble reverberation time. In the effector, the ratio of the high-frequency reverberation time can be adjusted according to the actual situation, that is, the ratio of the high-frequency reverberation time to the low-frequency reverberation time. The larger the ratio (the closer to 1) is, the slower the high-frequency attenuation process. On the contrary, it shows that the high-frequency attenuation is rapid. In the application, the sound engineer can use it to correct the presence of reverberation time ratio defects in the room, making the reverb effect sound more natural and natural.
