Real Audio is a music compression format introduced by Real networks; the compression ratio can reach 1:96, so it is popular on the Internet. The compressed music files can be played back smoothly on a computer that is connected to the MODEM at a rate of 14.4 kb/s, that is, played while downloading.

Real Audio encoded audio files are suffixed with “.RA”. Another file with the suffix ".RAM" is a distribution file that controls the streaming of ".RA" media. Its capacity is very small. Its function is to control the playback process of the ".RA" file while downloading. At present, the widely used playing software is ReaIPlayer, which is a player that supports streaming media.
