What Is Loudness?

- Jun 19, 2018-

The loudness of the sound is related to the amplitude (sound pressure) of the sound wave. For a signal of the same frequency, the louder the sound pressure is, the louder it is. However, human ears have different sensations of loudness (sensitivity) for sounds of different frequencies, that is, different loudness is felt for sounds with different frequencies and the same sound pressure. Sounds in the frequency range of 3 to 4 kHz are easily perceived (higher sensitivity), and sounds in the lower or higher frequency range are not easily perceived. The curve describing the relationship between sound pressure level and frequency under equal loudness conditions is called equal loudness curve.
