The Difference Between Analog and Digital Audio Cables

- Oct 10, 2018-

Analog audio cables can be used for digital audio signal transmission; the exact length is determined by the error correction performance and the receiver's signal instability tolerance. Most analog audio cables have a characteristic impedance of 40 to 70Ω. Impedance fluctuations do not affect the sound quality of analog audio. This is terrible for digital audio signals. The digital audio signal is a very high frequency (up to 6 MHz) pulse wave. To accurately transmit the signal, the cable must match the impedance of the transmitting and receiving devices. The impedance of the entire cable must be consistent. For example, the AES/EBU cable must exhibit constant 110Ω impedance from one end to the other.

What if you temporarily replace the digital audio cable with an analog audio cable? First, due to impedance mismatch, standing wave reflection will occur in the cable, “contaminating” the signal, blurring the contour of the pulse wave; in addition, the pollution also comes from the distributed capacitance of the cable, which can reduce the high frequency response of the cable and affect the rise time of the pulse. . The high and low voltage transitions of the pulse waveform define the 0 and 1 of the signal. If the impedance and capacitance are affected by the incorrect impedance, the pulse signal is contaminated, and the interpretation of the signal at the receiving end will cause an error. , which reduces the quality of the audio and even errors.

Digital audio cables are used for analog signal transmission, and digital cables are superior to analog cables because of their extremely low capacitance.

In short, when using an audio cable to transmit audio signals on a daily basis, it is necessary to select different types of cables according to the characteristics of the transmitted audio signals and the degree of external interference. The main purpose is to ensure high-quality transmission of audio signals.
