1. The connection
Before purchasing an active speaker, you need to see the input connector on the back of the speaker. For civilian-grade active speakers, RCA interfaces are generally only available, and a few high-quality models also offer XLR interfaces. For the monitor-level active speakers, only the XLR interface is generally provided. Therefore, before using it, you need to know whether the output interface provided by your front-end device can match the speaker.
In terms of position, there is no clear standard for the placement of the speakers. However, we recommend that users use a positive triangle position. The so-called positive triangle placement method is that the connection between the two speakers and the listener is an equilateral triangle, and the radiation directions of the two speakers need to face the listener. The advantage of this placement method is to get as much direct sound as possible, to hear more details and lower sound. The distance between the speaker and the person depends on the specifications of the speaker. For a general 2-way active speaker (5 to 8 inches of woofer), the distance is about 1 meter, and the large active speaker with a three-way design (the woofer is 10 inches or more). It is about 2 to 4 meters.
3. Adjust the output sound pressure of the left and right channels
After setting the position, you need to adjust the output sound pressure of the left and right channel speakers to be equal. Active speakers usually have a volume adjustment function. You need to place a sound pressure meter in the listening position, then play the pink noise test audio signal, combined with the preamplifier (or other controller) and the volume adjustment of the speaker. The function adjusts the sound pressure of the two speakers to the same. At the same time, in terms of reference sound pressure values, we recommend that you maintain a sound pressure level of about 80 dB while listening to music. In addition, the standard recording sound pressure level of the recording studio specified in the world is 80dB to 83dB. This standard is also available for your reference. But the premise is that your speakers must maintain very low distortion at this sound pressure level.
4. Appropriate use of Room EQ adjustment
Most active speakers offer Room EQ, which provides high-, medium-, and low-frequency response curves that can be fine-tuned in different environments. For example, if the speaker is placed directly on the desktop, the desktop will cause too much low-frequency reflection and the low frequency will become cloudy, then the user needs to attenuate the low frequency band; if the room does not do much acoustic treatment If the high frequency emits too much sound, then the high frequency needs to be attenuated. However, the Room EQ function can actually play a very limited role, and it is necessary to get a good sound through the cooperation of the room.
